As more EV owners switch to Level 2 home charging, portable chargers have become an increasingly attractive alternative to permanently installed wallboxes.

Two popular options in this category are the Energbison Level 2 EV Charger and the Calion Level 2 EV Portable Charger. Both these chargers are designed to replace slow Level 1 charging with faster 240V performance, but they take different approaches.

Energbison Level 2 EV Charger

The Energbison Level 2 EV Charger is designed for drivers who want both home charging convenience and travel flexibility.

One of its biggest advantages is its hybrid design. It can function as a wall-mounted home charger or be quickly removed and packed into its included travel bag for use at RV parks or other NEMA 14-50 outlets.

The only drawbacks are that the charging cable can become stiff in freezing temperatures, and the standard package lacks a heavy-duty wall dock to better support the control box.

Calion Level 2 EV Portable Charger

The Calion Level 2 EV Portable Charger is aimed at drivers who prefer straightforward operation over smart technology.

Instead of a touchscreen or LCD display, Calion uses a simple LED indicator system that clearly communicates charging status while reducing complexity.

However, the charger lacks Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and remote scheduling features. Tesla owners will also need a separate J1772 adapter, and full charging performance requires access to a dedicated 240V NEMA 14-50 outlet.

Which portable EV charger is better?

Both chargers provide reliable Level 2 charging, but they appeal to different types of EV owners.

The Energbison Level 2 EV Charger is the stronger choice for buyers who value smart features, adjustable charging output, and the flexibility of using one charger at home or while travelling.

On the other hand, the Calion Level 2 EV Portable Charger is ideal for drivers seeking a lightweight, dependable charger with simple controls and minimal setup.
