Epic Games is trialling a new AI chatbot to handle customer support for its hit battle royale title Fortnite, the company confirmed through its official “Status” account on X (formerly Twitter).

The feature is now undergoing limited rollout, with only 1% of English-language users of Epic’s site for player support able to test the AI system.

The company confirms that it is an AI chatbot that will be used to help players with “support questions,” though Epic did not elaborate on how much support that will entail. If the trial is successful, Epic will open up the feature more broadly in the future.

Fortnite remains one of the most played games in the world and has often been the focus of disagreements in the labour dispute and tech spaces.

Recently, Epic added the proximity chat feature to Fortnite, which has prompted stricter moderation in a matter of weeks, with thousands of players being banned for abusive behaviour.

AI inclusion in gaming

The inclusion of AI in gaming has been a hot topic in recent years and has spurred controversies among players and developers. Some fans are excited for AI to make their gaming experience more efficient, while others criticise the role AI plays in the creative process, such as art, voice acting, etc.

Earlier this year, Fortnite dipped its toes into generative AI along with an AI-driven Darth Vader during a Star Wars event in the game.

Epic’s experiment also mirrors moves by other major players in the industry. Last year, Microsoft launched its own AI-powered customer support bot for Xbox, alongside updates to its “Copilot” AI system for gaming.

The chatbot test comes as Fortnite prepares for its annual Fortnitemares Halloween event, which promises major crossovers and collaborations. Teasers have already hinted at K-Pop Demon Hunters, with rumours circulating about appearances from Jason Voorhees, Scooby-Doo, and more.
