Epic Games has announced that Fortnite is officially back on the Google Play Store in the United States after the company’s long-running legal fight with big tech platforms.

With its return to Android via Google Play, Fortnite is now available on almost every major gaming platform, nearly five years after it was removed amid antitrust disputes.

Epic Games had, in 2020, filed lawsuits against both Google and Apple over their in-app purchase policies and the commissions charged from developers.

The case became one of the most closely watched in the tech and gaming world, for the larger implications on platform control and competition.

Fortnite returns to Android following a settlement with Google in November, when both firms agreed to changes based on an earlier order by US District Judge James Donato.

The revised agreement discussed developer fees, third-party billing systems, and the processing of in-app payments on the Google Play Store.

A similar development happened earlier this year with Apple, wherein US Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers, back in May, had ruled in favour of Epic Games. The ruling ordered Apple to stop charging commissions on purchases made outside its App Store ecosystem.

After months of legal back-and-forth, Fortnite made its way back onto iOS devices in the US, ending its long absence from Apple's platform.
