GeoGuessr is finally making its way to Steam after 12 years as a browser-based experience. The game, which challenges players to determine their real-world location using Google Street View, is set to launch in Early Access sometime in April 2025.
Originally launched in 2013, GeoGuessr has gained a massive following, with millions of players worldwide. Over the years, the game has evolved beyond casual play, developing a competitive esports scene where players race against time and opponents to pinpoint their location.
GeoGuessr to launch on Steam
The Steam version will expand on this, introducing ranked Solo Duels and unranked Team Duels, allowing players to compete in structured matchmaking. Additionally, it will support cross-play with the browser version, ensuring seamless competition between platforms.
According to its Steam listing, GeoGuessr will be in Early Access for a minimum period of six months while developers continue to develop new game modes, maps, and more competitive features.
This implies that the Steam release may provide an even more immersive experience than the current releases. That said, the precise launch date and price have not yet been announced.
At present, the browser release provides only three free guesses a day before needing to subscribe for a minimum of $2.49 per month. The iOS and Android mobile app is gated behind a $2.99 Pro Unlimited plan.
Unlike these versions, the Steam edition will have its own account, which means it might have a different pricing structure. It is not yet certain if it will be subscription-based or a one-time buy.
