Google announces new AI tools for education: Enhancing learning and teaching

Google has announced several updates to its Google Workspace for Education, to enhance students and educators learning experience. The new features include the integration of the Gemini AI tool, a generative AI technology, to teen students and educators by introducing several new features that can create engaging learning experiences.

Gemini for teen students

Gemini is a responsible AI tool that has been designed to prioritise safety, with multiple other features including content policies and guardrails to prevent inappropriate responses.

This tool will be available for the teen students on their Google Workspace for Education accounts in over 100 countries. The tool provides a guided support, practice materials, and real-time feedback that can help out the students study confidently.

New features for educators

  • Google has introduced several new features that offer the educators ways to create engaging learning experiences. These include
  • Google Vids, a collaborative video creation app that makes it easy to create engaging videos.
  • Read Along in Google Classroom, which helps students build independent reading skills with the help of AI.
  • Gemini in Classroom features powered by LearnLM, makes lesson and content planning easier.
  • Resources tab in Classroom, which allows educators to create, manage, and share interactive lessons.

Collaboration and integration

  • Google has also announced new features to enable greater integration and collaboration including
  • Google Meet LTI, which allows students and educators to access Google Meet directly from their LMS.
  • Assignments LTI 1.3, which enables educators to better distribute, analyse, and grade student work.
  • SIS integrations allow the educators to export grades and set up classes with OneRoster SIS partners.

Security and inclusivity

  • Google has also emphasised its commitment to security and inclusivity. New features includes
  • Chat safer settings for students in Google Chat.
  • Improved controls in Admin console, including multi-party approval and context-aware access.
  • Dark theme in Google Classroom mobile app to reduce the eye strain.
