A year after OpenAI launched ChatGPT and sparked a race of artificial intelligence (AI), Google has launched Gemini which it believes will serve as an arch-rival to ChatGPT.

The new update arrives eight months after Bard's initial launch by the search giant.

Gemini, integrated into Google’s Bard chatbot for the English language, is an AI model capable of processing text, images, and video, and could become one of Google's most significant algorithms since PageRank.

PageRank played a pivotal role in Google's rise to prominence. The initial release of Gemini is expanding to over 170 countries.

The AI model features three versions: Gemini Ultra, the largest and most capable; Gemini Pro, which is versatile across various tasks; and Gemini Nano, designed for specific tasks and mobile devices.

The search engine giant Google aims to monetise AI and plans to offer Gemini Pro through its cloud services starting from December 13.

Google intends to incorporate Gemini into various products, including generative search, ads, and Chrome, in the coming months.

According to Google, the full-power Gemini version is slated for 2024 for a full-fledged debut.

Gemini Ultra is capable of extensive multitasking of language comprehension, surpassing human experts in areas such as mathematics, physics, history, law, medicine, and ethics.

However, Gemini’s Ultra model outperformed GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 in a few benchmarks but disregarded answering questions about how it compares to GPT-4, according to a white paper Google released Wednesday.

Early in the year, there were reports that Google delayed the release of Gemini due to its lack of readiness, which reflects the company's previous challenges in introducing AI tools.
