Google's flagship navigation app, Google Maps, is undergoing a huge transformation into a comprehensive travel assistant powered by the company's advanced AI chatbot Gemini.
Starting this week, users on Android and iOS will receive updates that offer more than just basic directions, as the app will now provide contextual, landmark-based instructions and traffic and safety alerts. This way, the app will ensure a more conversational and intuitive experience.
What sets the new Google Maps update apart is that instead of simple distance measurements, the AI interface will offer guidance like “turn right after the Thai Siam restaurant” or “head through the arch by Central Park,” utilising real-world visuals.
Google Maps' other notable integration is with Google Lens, which allows users to point their camera at a location for instant details, enabling questions such as “Does this café accept pets?” or “Is this building an art gallery?” This intensive rollout has begun making its way to major markets, with a global launch planned in the coming weeks.
In densely populated areas like India, Gemini AI's ten region-specific updates will be introduced, including improved disruption alerts and transport suggestions tailored for urban travel. For instance, if a road closure affects a typical commute, the app can alert users before they even open it.
Given these AI enhancements, Google Maps is expected to evolve from a simple route planner to an active AI-driven travel assistant.
