Google has started rolling out a new portrait-related setting in the Google Phone app for Pixel devices, giving users greater control over how portrait processing behaves during calls.
This is an update which will be introduced through a server-side rollout and will only affect Pixel handsets. This will allow consumers the ability to control the application of Portrait Effects through the Phone app instead of relying on the default system behaviour.
Though portrait effects have always been related to photos or videos, Google is extending similar processing notions to communication-related features such as calling. This not only showcases the significance of camera behaviour with respect to video calling, but it is also an integrated part of hybrid communications.
The impact of the change is positive for users, as there is predictability involved. The new option ensures that there are no unexpected visual effects, especially for users who are involved in a lot of voice calls and video calls, as well as camera-related features for Pixel smartphones.
The update fits well within Google's overall strategy to improve its Phone app through the addition of AI-based services like Call Screen, Hold for Me, Direct My Call, and better spam detection. It seems that the Phone app will not only be a dialler in the future but also serve as an essential hub for smart communications.
Not all users will be able to see the new portrait mode option at first, as it will depend on app versions and servers. This update will impact all supported Pixel variants once it is fully implemented.
