Following the successful debut of the Pixel 9 series, Google is shifting focus to its next release — the Pixel 9a, a mid-range smartphone, which is said to be the successor of the Pixel 8a.
While the Android phone manufacturer hasn’t revealed much details about the handset, recent rumours and leaked images have revealed some interesting details months before the launch of Pixel 9a.
Google Pixel 9a specs (expected)
Display
According to the leaked images, Google Pixel 9a might get the same design as the rest of the Pixel 9 lineup. However, it is expected to stick with the same 6.1-inch screen size as the Pixel 8a, meaning an Actua display, instead of the extremely bright Super Actua panels found on the Pixel 9 Pro and Pro XL.
Hardware
Since the Pixel 6a, Google is offering a Tensor G4 in all A-series and is likely to use a similar chipset in the Google Pixel 9a.
While the Pixel 9 series uses the newer Exynos 5400 modem, reportedly, Google is planning to use an older modem, Exynos 5300, in Pixel 9a to cut the cost.
Software
Currently, all Google devices run Android 14; however, it is anticipated Pixel 9a might have Android 15 by the time it ships. As the company offers seven years of software support and Android upgrades, the Pixel 9a might also get seven years of support until 2032.
AI features
With the recent availability of Gemini Nano functionality on Google smartphones, the tech giant might integrate Gemini Live in Pixel 9a, replacing the Google Assistant.
Camera
Leaked images suggest that Google will continue the trend of using a Dual camera setup in its A-series, and, therefore, might use a similar old camera in Pixel 9a i.e. a 64MP primary sensor and 13MP ultrawide.
Pixel 9a release date and pricing (expected)
While Google raised the prices of the Pixel 9 series this year, it is likely to introduce the Pixel 9a as a mid-range smartphone with a more pocket-friendly pricing, around $499, making it a cheaper option available to the Pixel 9 that costs $799.
Coming towards the release date, Google usually launches its Pixel A-series during the May wind. It might follow the same trend and launch Pixel 9a in early 2025.
