Google has launched the first beta of Android 16, offering Pixel users an early look at the latest updates to its mobile operating system. Android 16 Beta 1 is now available as an over-the-air update for devices enrolled in the Android Beta Programme, bringing several exciting features for users and developers.

However, Google is encouraging developers to test their apps and provide feedback.

What’s new in Android 16 Beta 1?

One of the key updates is the introduction of Live Updates, a new type of notification designed for ongoing activities like food delivery, ridesharing, and navigation.

These notifications ensure smoother updates with customisable icons and progress tracking for real-time activities.

Google is also refining app compatibility for large screens, phasing out restrictions on screen orientation and resizability for apps targeting API levels 36 and above. This means apps on screens wider than 600dp will automatically resize for seamless usability across devices.

Moreover, Android 16 adds support for the Advanced Professional Video (APV) codec, enhancing video quality for 2K, 4K, and even 8K content. The APV codec enables near-lossless quality and smooth post-production workflows, making it ideal for professional creators.

Notably, other features include better predictive back animations, night mode camera indicators, and vertical text rendering, among other enhancements.

The beta update is available for Pixel 6, 7, 8, and 9 series devices, as well as the Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet. Users already in the Android Beta Programme or on Developer Preview 2 can install the update via the Beta Feedback app or Quick Settings.
