With Android 16 now in development, Google may be preparing to undo one of its most debated interface changes: the combined Internet tile.

According to new rumours, separate Wi-Fi and mobile data toggles could return, improving everyday usability for Android users.

The new features were first rolled out in Android version 12 in 2021. In versions of Android before this update, it was possible to turn Wi-Fi or mobile data on/off with one tap from quick settings.

In Android 12, the Internet tiles were integrated into one tile called Internet. Clicking on the Internet opens a broader space in which Wi-Fi and Internet settings are accessed.

The company reported that “a lot of people” had Wi-Fi turned off and relied on mobile data instead, and “then forgot Wi-Fi was off and wondered why the data usage was so high.”

The Internet panel helped decrease this problem by allowing users to change connections without turning off the Wi-Fi capability. However, heavy users considered it a slowdown for them.

Over the years, there were apps available that attempted to bring the classic toggle interface back. Almost all of them required special permissions, making them unusable for the average consumer. There was a point when it seemed like Google had no intention of reversing this decision.

This could be about to change. LineageOS Lead Developer Michael Bestas has identified code for the Android Open Source Project that corresponds to Android 16 QPR2. This code shows that Google is testing a split internet tile that brings back buttons for Wi-Fi and mobile data.
