In what appears to be a major move aimed at widening digital inclusion and addressing the digital divide, the government of Pakistan is planning to launch a new initiative allowing citizens to buy smartphones through interest-free instalments.

Named the “Smartphones for All” scheme, the smartphone policy is being designed to make mobile phones more accessible to low-income individuals across Pakistan.

State Minister for IT and Telcom Shaza Fatima Khawaja announced the rollout of the smartphone scheme during a recent ICT seminar, noting that the initiative is about to be finalised.

According to Pakistan Observer, the smartphone instalment scheme is being developed in collaboration with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and major telecom operators.

Individuals signing up for the programme will be able to purchase smartphones worth up to Rs100,000, with flexible instalment options reaching as far as one year.

To secure a smartphone through the “Smartphones for All” scheme, citizens need to submit valid CNICs in addition to small down payments.

The mobile phone scheme will serve students, professionals, and people from underprivileged backgrounds, enabling them to have a smartphone to stay connected, access online education, and participate in the digital economy.
