Days ahead of President-elect Donald Trump assuming office on January 20, a mobile application has been designed to simplify for users to migrate their entire community from Elon Musk's X (formerly Twitter) to rival platforms like Bluesky or Mastodon.

The app, developed by French researchers, is a result of a campaign launched to urge users to ditch X on the day when Trump's inauguration ceremony as a US president is scheduled, Dawn reported.

The developers are reportedly making significant strides as part of their campaign to drive the use of the app. Dubbed “HelloQuitX”, the mobile application is said to be named after a Japanese cartoon cat Hello Kitty.

Owing to Musk's visible support for the Trump administration, which also clutched headlines during Trump's campaign as a presidential candidate, the platform saw the exodus of renowned institutions, politicians, celebrities and public figures around the world shortly after Musk's re-election in November last year.

Prominent among them are the horror novelist Stephen King, the British newspaper The Guardian and the French infectious disease centre the Institut Pasteur.

However, countless users on X are forced to stick to the platform because of their massive following, said David Chavalarias, a mathematician at France’s CNRS public research body and a co-developer of the HelloQuitX app. “Some can’t bring themselves to leave for fear of losing their sources or their following.”

How to leave X without losing following?

Chavalarias, with 30 others, decided to offer such users a workaround, making it easier for them to withdraw from X along with their vast network of followers.

HelloQuitX developers were of the view that Bluesky and Mastodon, two newcomer social media platforms, are considered “more compatible with privacy and freedom of speech,” as the app allows users to migrate their entire congregations.
