HMD Global, the company behind Nokia-branded smartphones for the past seven years, is set to introduce its line of HMD-branded devices, potentially signalling the end of Nokia-branded smartphones.

The company is teasing its upcoming product portfolio, dropping hints about what to expect from HMD phones. A significant change is the shift in the X service user ID and website address. The first HMD-branded smartphone is anticipated to debut at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024 event in Barcelona.

The Nokia.com/phones website now redirects to HMD.com, and the X ID has transitioned to @HMDglobal from @nokiamobile, indicating the company's transition. HMD's official website explains that it is establishing an original HMD brand while continuing to offer Nokia smartphones and dumbphones, as well as introducing phones from new partnerships.

"We're still makers of Nokia smartphones and Nokia dumbphones, but we're getting warmed up to bring you even more, including original HMD devices, and phones from all-new partnerships," the website states, according to Gadgets360. The expanded portfolio will include smartphones, tablets, and feature phones.

In a teaser video on the company website, HMD Global highlights the Human Mobile Devices name behind its abbreviation, emphasising that HMD is the "manufacturer of Nokia phones."

HMD Global was founded in 2016 after Microsoft sold its rights to the Nokia brand for ten years. The first handset, Nokia 6, was launched by HMD Global in 2017.

Details regarding the name and launch date of the first HMD smartphone are currently unknown. According to previous leaks, the device, codenamed N159V, features a dual rear camera unit led by a 108-megapixel primary sensor with optical image stabilisation (OIS).

The handset is expected to be available in black and cyan colour options with plastic frames and is anticipated to be unveiled at the MWC event in Barcelona in the last week of February. The HMD brand is expected to coexist with Nokia phones.
