Android 14 enhanced drag-and-drop functionality by allowing users to hold content, switch apps with another finger, and drop it into the desired app. Android 15 further improved this with App Pairs on Pixel phones, enabling apps to open side-by-side, instantly share files, and save frequently used combinations to the home screen for quick access.

Gadinsider has compiled a step-by-step guide to How to drag and drop content on Android 15.

How to drag and drop on Android 15

Dragging and dropping in Android 15 builds on the functionality introduced in earlier versions, with key refinements that make it easier to transfer content between apps. Here’s how to use this feature:

    1. Open the recent apps screen: Launch the two apps between which you want to transfer media, so they appear on the recent apps screen.
    2. Fetch content in the first app: Open the first app and locate the content you wish to move.
    3. Create a Drag Shadow: Hold and drag the desired content to create a drag shadow. If it’s text, it will be highlighted.
    4. Navigate using gesture controls: Use another finger to tap the overview or hamburger button in the navigation bar. If you're using gesture navigation, swipe up and hold briefly to access the app switcher.
    5. Open the Target App: Select the other app to launch it.
    6. Drop the content: Ensure the cursor is functional before releasing the dragged content. If not, the content may disappear.
