Cybercriminals are always coming up with new ways to trick you into revealing sensitive information. One of the emerging scams is when hackers hijack your WhatsApp account through a simple verification code.
Once they have access, they can impersonate you and request money from your contacts in the name of an emergency.
Gadinsider has got you a guide to stay safe from these kind of scams.
Step-by-step WhatsApp safety guide
- If you receive an OTP or verification code sent by WhatsApp, do not disclose it to anybody, even if claiming to be your friend or family member.
- Fraudsters can call faking to come from a real source or seem friendly to deceive you. End the call the moment they inquire about your WhatsApp code or individual details.
- If a person claiming to be your relative or friend requests money on the grounds of an "emergency", always call and verify their identity before sending any amount.
- Open WhatsApp Settings > Account > Two-step verification and activate an additional layer of security by setting a PIN.
- Forward this information to family and friends. Spread awareness in your WhatsApp groups to avoid others becoming victims.
- When your WhatsApp has been hacked, report it as soon as possible to WhatsApp and alert your contacts not to respond to any dubious messages.
