Cybercriminals are always coming up with new ways to trick you into revealing sensitive information. One of the emerging scams is when hackers hijack your WhatsApp account through a simple verification code.

Once they have access, they can impersonate you and request money from your contacts in the name of an emergency.

Gadinsider has got you a guide to stay safe from these kind of scams.

Step-by-step WhatsApp safety guide

  1. If you receive an OTP or verification code sent by WhatsApp, do not disclose it to anybody, even if claiming to be your friend or family member.
  2. Fraudsters can call faking to come from a real source or seem friendly to deceive you. End the call the moment they inquire about your WhatsApp code or individual details.
  3. If a person claiming to be your relative or friend requests money on the grounds of an "emergency", always call and verify their identity before sending any amount.
  4. Open WhatsApp Settings > Account > Two-step verification and activate an additional layer of security by setting a PIN.
  5. Forward this information to family and friends. Spread awareness in your WhatsApp groups to avoid others becoming victims.
  6. When your WhatsApp has been hacked, report it as soon as possible to WhatsApp and alert your contacts not to respond to any dubious messages.
