Strengthening their partnership and marking a notable milestone in deploying advanced robotics into automotive manufacturing, Hyundai Motor Group and Boston Dynamics announced plans to deploy the latter's new Atlas humanoid robot at Hyundai’s US plant soon.
Boston Dynamics, based in Waltham, Massachusetts, has already been supplying its Spot quadruped robots to Hyundai to predict maintenance and inspection areas.
With Hyundai investing $6 billion in these projects as part of its $21bn US investment, the automaker is establishing itself to become Boston Dynamics’ largest client and a prominent player in industrial robotics.
The partnership is expected to help in the commercialisation of humanoid robots, combining robotics, EVs, and automation technologies in Hyundai’s operations.
At Hyundai's plants, Atlas robots will commit to physically demanding tasks and improve productivity and safety at the company’s Metaplant America in Georgia.
Hyundai Executive Chair Euisun Chung called the collaboration a step toward “revolutionising the business environment,” adding that “humanoid robots and physical AI” are crucial for the robotic industry's future success.
Boston Dynamics is also working with NVIDIA, Google DeepMind, and the Toyota Research Institute to advance robot capabilities.
