The last supermoon of 2025 is set to light up the night sky, giving astronomy fans and casual skywatchers a final celestial highlight of the year.
The December 2025 supermoon, also known as the Cold Moon, will rise on Thursday, offering one of the brightest night-sky events before the year ends.
This rare sighting is capturing global attention as one of the biggest supermoon events of 2025.
This month's supermoon is special because it appears higher in the night sky than any other full moon this year.
According to astronomers, the Moon's unusually elevated position makes this 2025 Cold Moon appear much larger and more striking than an average full moon.
What is supermoon?
Supermoons happen because the Moon achieves "perigee", the part of its orbit that brings it closer to Earth.
When that happens in conjunction with syzygy, a straight-line configuration of the Sun, Earth, and Moon, the result is a noticeably brighter and larger presentation of the lunar body.
The Space & Upper Atmosphere Research Commission says the Moon will appear 7.9% larger and 15% more luminous than average.
It can even appear bigger when it is near the horizon owing to the "Moon Illusion", a kind of visual phenomenon that experts still cannot explain.
The illusion becomes "slightly more striking" during a supermoon, said astronomer William Alston of the University of Hertfordshire.
When and where to watch last supermoon of 2025?
Global viewing times vary. Across Europe, it will appear between 11:00pm and midnight. Viewers in Eastern and Western America can see the Moon pass in front of the Pleiades star cluster on the evening of Thursday. The supermoon reaches peak fullness at 6:14pm.
