The Geminid meteor shower is visible in Pakistan on Sunday, as the annual celestial event reaches its peak overnight. Pakistan lies in the Northern Hemisphere, where the Geminids are considered one of the brightest and most reliable meteor showers of the year.

However, viewers don’t need to stick to a single hour. The best time to watch the Geminid meteor shower is from late evening until dawn, as the radiant point in the constellation Gemini rises by mid- to late evening and climbs higher in the sky after midnight.

This year's display is particularly propitious since the waning crescent moon will not interfere, and the skies will be dark enough for continuous viewing.

The observers in rural or dark-sky locations can see up to 120 meteors per hour, though a rate of 40-60 per hour is more realistic for most viewers.

A particularly special feature about the 2025 Geminids is the appearance of Jupiter, the brightest starlike object in the night sky, which will appear near the meteor shower's radiant point close to the stars Castor and Pollux.

Meteors can streak across any part of the sky; tracing their paths backward leads to this radiant area.

Best time to watch Geminids in Pakistan

For viewers in Pakistan, the Geminid meteor shower is best viewed from late evening tonight, peaking after midnight and continuing till the break of dawn on Sunday, with peak hours ranging from 1:00am to 4:00am, according to Pakistan Standard Time. The reason is that the radiant point in the constellation Gemini rises higher in the sky during these hours, hence increased meteor activities.

Many Geminid meteors are known to be slow, bright, and sometimes coloured, making it easier to spot them even for casual sky viewers. Adding to the spectacle, Jupiter is shining near the Geminid radiant, helping viewers locate the general area of activity.

How to watch Geminid meteors?

No special equipment is needed to view the display of Geminid meteors. Observers should go out, away from city lights, into the open sky, and allow at least 20 minutes for eyes to adjust to darkness. The meteors will radiate but can appear anywhere in the sky; lying back and looking broadly is suggested.

With clear skies, observers in Pakistan can see 30 to 50 meteors every hour, making it one of the best sky-watching nights of the year.
