Apple has finally rolled out the iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, introducing several new features alongside the support for Rich Communications Services (RCS) messaging to help improve communication with Android users.
What is RCS messaging?
RCS messaging, first announced in June, will enable iPhone users to send high-resolution pictures, audio, and videos to Android users.
With RCS, iPhone users can also read receipts, something which was previously exclusive to iMessage and other instant messaging apps. While RCS messages will still appear in green bubbles, the Messages app will show the label “Text Message – RCS” in the conversation.

Check if your carrier supports RCS messaging
Apple has updated its Wireless Carrier Support webpage to show which carriers already provide RCS support on the iPhone with iOS 18.
RCS-supported carriers include major US carriers including AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon. However, some carriers in Canada, Europe, and Asia also provide RCS support for iOS users. Users can also expect more carriers to add RCS support shortly.
How to enable RCS on iPhone
Once you’ve updated your iPhone to iOS 18, you can try RCS by enabling the messaging toggle.
- Open “Settings” on your iPhone.
- Now, tap “Apps” near the bottom of the menu.
- Then, tap “Messages.”
- Afterwards, click “RCS Messaging” toggle to enable it.
In this way, your conversations will automatically be upgraded from SMS to RCS.
Additionally, the messaging upgrades in iOS 18 also include new text effects and formatting options in iMessage and the ability to schedule messages to be sent later.
