Apple is working on its next-generation C2 modem, which is expected to debut in the iPhone 18 Pro series.

However, this way Apple plans to reduce its reliance on Qualcomm’s 5G modems and use its in-house network chips for better performance and efficiency.

The iPhone 16e was the first Apple device to feature the C1 modem, and early 5G tests showed promising results.

However, the C1 modem lacks mmWave support, which is why Apple is still using Qualcomm 5G modems in the upcoming iPhone 17 series.

Reports suggest that Apple is working on the C2 modem to address this issue and provide faster 5G connectivity in future models.

Apple’s C1 chip is made up of multiple 4-7nm baseband components along with a 55nm power management chip. While it performs well, the lack of mmWave technology limits its speed and coverage.

Reportedly, Apple will introduce the C2 modem exclusively in the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, while the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18 Plus may still use the C1 modem or a Qualcomm chip.

Apple is being secretive about these developments, exact details may not get official until the iPhone 17 launch or later. Some reports also suggest that Apple may eventually integrate its network chip inside the main processor, similar to how Qualcomm modems work.
