The federal government has cut the petrol price by Rs7.54 a litre for a fortnight, while diesel prices rose by Rs1.48 a litre, the Finance Division announced in a notification on Thursday.

With the adjustment, petrol will cost Rs264.61 a litre, down from Rs272.15, while high-speed diesel (HSD) has gone to Rs285.83 a litre.

Just two weeks previous, fuel prices were going in opposite directions, with petrol rising by Rs5.36 a litre and diesel going up by Rs11.37 a litre.

Petrol is still the primary fuel for small vehicles, rickshaws, and motorbikes, making it a source fuel for commuting and daily travel for work. The reduction in prices provides a modicum of relief to householders of middle and lower income, who feel the brunt of rapidly rising fuel costs.

On the other hand, diesel is used in trucks, buses, and trains, especially as a source fuel for agricultural machinery (such as use with tractors and tube wells).

Reportedly, the trends in the international oil prices and exchange rate variations continue to influence domestic pricing of fuel.
