In a development which seems privy to the mainstream media, Meta is reported to be discreetly extending the boundaries of virtual reality, displaying fascinating prototype headsets.

Believed to redefine virtual immersion, the “Tiramisu” and “Boba 3” models were previewed at SIGGRAPH 2025, underlining the future of mixed reality.

Both models are said to prioritise visual fidelity and field of view that easily outdo the current Quest series.

Meta's Tiramisu virtual reality that feels real

Out of the two, the Tiramisu model “sets a new milestone for realism in VR,” as it delivers approximately three times the contrast of the Meta Quest 3, complemented by an angular resolution of 90 pixels per degree (3.6 times higher than Quest 3) and an mind-blowing brightness of 1,400 nits, which marks a staggering 14 times increase.

Although this immense scale of clarity deserves praise, its design is substantially bulkier and heavier, which causes restriced field of view. Nevertheless, Meta claimed that it offers a visual experience that “passes the visual Turing test” more convincingly than ever.

Like Tiramisu, the Boba 3 series also has its own distinct niche, featuring an ultra-wide field of view. With a 180-degree horizontal and 120-degree vertical span, these models approach the natural human vision field of around 200 degrees.

They utilise mass-produced displays and lens technology similar to the Quest 3 but enhance this with 4K-by-4K resolution per eye, exceeding earlier Boba prototypes.

The Facebook maker emphasises that these are research prototypes, not yet ready to serve consumers. Regardless, their disclosure has given enthusiasts a glimpse into the potential of future headsets.
