Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox console has reportedly moved beyond the concept stage, as several rumours confirmed that Microsoft could soon start making development kits (devkits) and finalising details like supplier contracts.
Reportedly, the next-gen Xbox is expected to launch a powerful new console and a possible handheld device between 2027 and 2028.
Microsoft finalises plans for next Xbox
Microsoft has been teasing its next-gen Xbox since 2024, with executives calling it the "biggest technical leap" in gaming history.
While specific details remain unconfirmed, reports suggest that the new Xbox lineup may include two devices: a traditional home console and a handheld gaming system.
The handheld was mentioned by Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer, who confirmed it was in the prototype stage in late 2024 but hadn’t yet been approved for production.
Moreover, the development of the Xbox Series X and Series S began around 2016, following their debut four years later in 2020. Leaked internal Microsoft documents from 2023 pointed to a 2028 release for the new generation Xbox console. However, the company is expected to adjust the timeline based on market trends and competition.
Microsoft has historically announced new Xbox consoles about 6 to 12 months before release, so an official reveal might not happen anytime soon. As development moves forward, fans can expect more details in the coming years.
