In an era where there's an abundance of AI-backed devices which comes at extremely high price points, Microsoft on Tuesday announced to launch new Surface laptops and tablets devices later this month.

By debuting its latest Surface devices, the tech giant is aiming to bring advanced AI capabilities to a wider, budget-bound audience.

Microsoft's new affordable Surface laptops

The updated Surface Laptop (13-inch) and Surface Pro (12-inch) will be launched and available from 20 May, at affordable price tags of $899 and $799, respectively.

“These new Surface devices are designed for customers for whom affordability matters, especially those starting their careers,” said Pavan Davuluri, Microsoft's corporate vice president of Windows and Devices.

It was also claimed that both devices will feature Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon X Plus chips to come on par with Apple's MacBook Air, which starts at $999, and iPad Air Pro models ranging from $649 to $999.

These new models are Microsoft’s all-time low-cost options that support its “Copilot+” AI features introduced last year.

Copilot+ allows users to interact with their devices in natural language, such as asking the AI chatbot to adjust settings or generate draft documents without driving deep into settings.

For requiring specific high-performance chips, the Copilot+ AI tools were limited to premium PCs and laptops typically priced above $1,000.
