NASA’s stranded astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore are set to return back to Earth aboard SpaceX's Crew-9 mission in March 2025.
Initially, both astronauts were expected to return within 10 days, which has been extended due to some technical issues with Boeing's Starliner spacecraft.
Mission extension due to technical challenges
Space.com reported that according to NASA, the Starliner spacecraft encountered thruster issues during docking procedures, prompting extensive analysis. Following these delays, ISS made a decision for Williams and Wilmore to return aboard Crew-9's Dragon capsule.
The setback has resulted from ongoing work on a new Crew Dragon vehicle, which is now swapped for an available one to expedite the procedure.
Response to 'stranded' narrative
During a conversation with CNN, Wilmore highlighted that the situation was a planned adjustment instead of an emergency. He said that they neither feel abandoned nor stranded. He further explained that in case of an emergency, all astronauts aboard can immediately return back, noting that he takes this extended stay as an opportunity to continue their work.
Stranded astronaut's return timeline
NASA has scheduled to deploy Crew-10 on March 12, with an expected timeline of a week later. Both the stranded astronauts have expressed their dedication to completing their mission aims while aboard the ISS.
