Building on the success of its original authentication platform, Proton has launched a new authenticator app in a bid to enhance online security through automatically generated two-factor authentication (2FA) codes.
Announced in a blog post by the privacy-focused productivity tool company, Proton Authenticator is now available for free across platforms, including iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, and Linux. This app is designed to add an additional layer of protection for users' online accounts.
The app enables effortless syncing of login credentials and accounts across multiple devices, with the company touting Proton Authenticator as an open-source service which employs end-to-end encryption to protect user data, ensuring a secure and transparent experience.
"Two-factor authentication is essential for everyone, not just those who care about their privacy," stated Eamonn Maguire, Head of Account Security at Proton. He added: "We believe strong security should never come at the cost of convenience or privacy," reflecting the company's commitment to giving users full control over their data.
It was also learned that Proton Authenticator simplifies the process by allowing users to import login codes from other authentication apps easily, with automatic backups for future access. On top of it, the app also works offline to provide 2FA codes without needing an internet connection, TechCrunch reported.
By launching an upgraded version of its authentication app, Proton has highlighted its dedication to privacy, enabling users to secure their accounts without relying on big tech companies like Google or Microsoft.
