OpenAI has launched a new interface named “Canvas,” introducing a new way for ChatGPT users to interact with the AI chatbot.
“Canvas will be available through a new option in the model dropdown menu, labelled "ChatGPT 4o with Canvas," the company explained in a blog post.
What is ChatGPT Canvas?
The new interface "Canvas" opens in a separate window, alongside the normal chat window, with a workspace for writing and coding projects.

Users can activate the Canvas by selecting “GPT-4o with Canvas” or by simply typing “use Canvas” when a separate workspace is beneficial for tasks like longer outputs or complex coding.
Canvas allows users and ChatGPT to collaborate on a project by asking ChatGPT to focus on and fix specific parts of its output that are wrong.
This works similarly to Claude Artifact, another OpenAI tool that allows users to highlight and change any single line of code it generates.
The company also revealed that it has trained its AI model to recognise when a chat prompt should trigger a new Canvas rather than simply responding in the normal chat window.
The new “Canvas” interface has started to roll out to ChatGPT Plus and Team users globally. However, Enterprise and Edu users will be able to get access next week. Once out of beta, the company also plans to make Canvas available to all ChatGPT Free users.
