Potential price hike for ChatGPT Plus

Citing OpenAI’s internal documents, The New York Times reported that OpenAI is gearing up to increase the price of ChatGPT paid tiers, including the ChatGPT Plus from $20 per month to $22 by the end of 2024.

The report also indicated that a gradual increase is expected over the next few years and by 2029, the AI startup discussed prices for subscriptions of its AI model are expected to go as high as $44 per month which is double the current pricing of these paid tiers.

These planned increases come as a result of the additional pressure on OpenAI by its investors to address its losses. While in August OpenAI gained around $300 million in monthly revenue the company is still facing significant financial challenges.

As per reports, the company is likely to lose up to $5 billion by the end of this year, mainly due to high operational costs such as staffing, office rent, and the infrastructure needed for AI model training. Notably, OpenAI’s revolutionary chatbot itself once cost OpenAI around $700,000 per day to operate.

However, the company’s plan to raise prices might receive severe backlash, as per the recent survey, around 10 million paying users of ChatGPT think that the current $20 per month subscription already costs a lot.
