In line with Pakistan striving towards its great space ambitions, SUPARCO, the country's space agency, has been assigned the task of launching a lunar mission by 2035.
Federal Minister for Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives Professor Ahsan Iqbal announced the development during a meeting with China’s Space Agency and Shan Zhongde, chairman of the China Atomic Energy Authority.
The meeting was held for collaboration in nuclear energy and space research with Pakistan's broader national development goals, Business Recorder reported.
Iqbal also highlighted the significance of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) in resolving infrastructure and energy challenges in the country.
He also pointed to the recent successful collaboration in nuclear energy, underlining the K-2, K-3, and C-5 power plants as the major outcomes.
Regarding the climate crisis, the need for alternative energy sources, driven by the global impacts of climate change on energy, food security, and healthcare, also became the central focus of the meeting.
The aspiring, new moon mission launch has emerged amid recent successful satellite launches with China and plans to send Pakistan’s first astronaut to the Chinese space station in 2026.
The minister also stressed the establishment of a Quantum Computing Centre to counter emerging technological challenges and the importance of strengthening research partnerships.
