The government is likely to suspend mobile phone services nationwide from Saturday as a precautionary measure to prevent any untoward incidents amid the countrywide protest announced by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

Geo News, citing Interior Ministry sources, reported that all police stations in Islamabad have finalised arrangements for arrests.

Sources revealed that Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has instructed authorities to prevent protestors from entering Islamabad. Additionally, Islamabad police, along with the FC and Rangers, will be deployed in the capital. Prison vans have also been placed on standby, according to the sources.

It is worth noting that earlier this month, the PTI called for nationwide protests against alleged rigging in the February 8 elections, the detention of party workers, and the passage of the contentious 26th Constitutional Amendment.

Earlier reports suggested that the disruption of mobile phone services would likely be caused by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) activating a firewall on mobile and internet networks.

The activation of the firewall is expected to slow down internet speeds significantly and may prevent users from downloading audio and video content on major social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram.
