In a significant move to tackle the increasing air pollution caused by vehicle emissions, the government of Punjab is introducing an e-taxi service in the province, which will provide online taxi drivers with electric vehicles (EVs) at affordable rates.
The e-taxis will be made available to drivers through down payments or convenient installment plans, encouraging wider participation in the programme.
The Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has assigned Provincial Minister for Transport Bilal Akbar Khan to launch e-taxi services across the province, on the pattern of China's taxi services.
E-taxi service in Punjab
Notably, the Punjab Transport Department is already working on initiating this programme, with the provincial transport minister engaging in discussions with various electric vehicle manufacturers.
Companies such as Deewan Group and National Radio & Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC) have shown their interest in this project.
The e-taxi service will be available 24/7 in all major cities of Punjab, with the first phase focusing on Lahore and divisional headquarters.
Benefits of e-taxi service
While the introduction of e-taxis is expected to provide affordable transportation to citizens, it will also decrease the unemployment rate slightly.
