The Punjab government on Friday decided to make some changes to the Motor Vehicle Ordinance 1965 in order to increase the traffic violation challan amount.

The Punjab cabinet approved a proposal suggesting amendments in 20 sections of the ordinance, and the summary has been sent to the Punjab assembly. Authorities are currently issuing challans ranging from Rs200 to Rs1,000.

The amendment suggests increasing this challan range from Rs2,000 and Rs20,000.

Motorcyclists will face a fine of Rs2,000, vehicles with engines up to 2000cc will be fined Rs5,000, while those with engines larger than 2000cc will get a fine of Rs20,000 for overspeeding on the roads across the province.

The summary added that commuters would pay Rs2,000 to Rs15,000 for breaking traffic signals, while breaching a zebra crossing would lead to a Rs10,000 fine.

Car drivers have been told to wear a seat belt. The proposal mentioned that under the point-based system two to four points will be deducted for a single violation, while the driver's license will be suspended for six months to a year once the driver loses 20 points.
