The Punjab government has announced that the Punjab Safe App will be free to use on all mobile networks, ensuring that users can access emergency services without requiring a mobile balance or an internet package.
Officials stated that the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has instructed all telecom operators to enable zero-rating for the use of the app, allowing citizens in flood-affected areas to use it free of charge to stay in contact with rescue teams and government departments during the ongoing crisis.
The app also allows users to dial 15 to receive immediate assistance while linking residents up with appropriate services from the relief services. Authorities believe it is now much easier for those in disaster-impacted regions to reach for help promptly.
Previously, the Punjab government had directed the operators to turn on the zero-rating to increase access for the app within 24 hours, noting that during emergencies, quick and zero-cost communications were key.
