In a significant stride towards making operational the province's first airline, Air Punjab, the Punjab government has started crucial financial and procedural steps to move the project closer to launch.

The Punjab government officials say that a significant step towards the creation of the airline was taken when the working committee in charge of Air Punjab formally submitted a request for Rs1 billion in funding to the provincial finance department.

Earlier this year, the project received official approval from the government.

Five aircraft will be leased in the first phase of operations after the necessary funds are released, according to administration sources.

The move is anticipated to support domestic air travel in Punjab and increase regional connectivity.

In order to obtain an operating licence, the provincial government is also negotiating with the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

A decision regarding the establishment of an official air authority or board to supervise the project is expected soon.
