The Pixel 9a, Google's so-far latest midrange phone, is an appealing option at $500, but there are some minor shortcomings which might make one worrisome after purchase, leading to regret over not patiently awaiting the far-off launch of the Pixel 10 series.
Pixel 9a's chipset performance and connectivity
The last few Pixel phones encountered reception issues and high battery drain. Part of this problem is caused by the Exynos 5400 modem enhancing Pixel 9's connectivity, but the device still lacks satellite support, which is crucial for some outdoor chores.
Google is expected to switch to the Tensor G5 chip on the Pixel 10, coupled with the MediaTek modem, to improve efficiency and thermal management.
Camera Upgrades: The Pixel 9a vs Upcoming Pixel 10
The Pixel 9a performs considerably in photography, but the demand for better features like laser autofocus, a higher-resolution ultrawide lens, and a rumoured telephoto lens in the upcoming Pixel 10 makes buyers hesitant to settle for less.
Pixel 9a fingerprint unlock
For unlocking the Pixel 9a, or any other phone, a million times daily, we often rely on fingerprint login due to Face Unlock not working in the dark. That said, it's frustrating when Pixel 9a's sensors fail, forcing users to use a PIN or passcode.
This triggers users to opt for a bit pricier phones, like the Pixel 9 with its ultrasonic sensor, which doesn't disrupt night vision. As the Pixel 10 is rumoured to feature an ultrasonic sensor, the Pixel 10a might as well follow suit and take over the Pixel 9a.
Pixel 9a's AI features' potential vs limitations
LLM-powered chatbots and text-based image generation in smartphones showcase AI's potential, and the Pixel 9a, with 8GB of RAM, runs the less capable Gemini XXS model, which limits features and subsequently fails to fully utilise AI's potential.
Although some AI tools aren't that capable, experts believe that on-device AI has a promising future. Unfortunately, the Pixel 9a's limitations impede its performance, forcing Pixel freaks to hope for improved AI features in the Pixel 10 series.
