Vanguard Exiles, a new auto battler game from Magic: The Gathering creator Richard Garfield, is set to launch in early access on March 11.

Unlike his past card-based games, this one brings a fresh approach with strategic battles, modular gameplay, and a steampunk-inspired art style.

What is Vanguard Exiles?

Vanguard Exiles is a strategy game where players deploy units, capture zones, and eliminate enemies to gain control of the battlefield. It follows a deploy-and-capture system, where unlocking stronger units allows players to fight tougher opponents on larger maps.

Moreover, the game is described as “massively modular,” meaning different units, factions, and zones will interact dynamically, creating fresh challenges in every match.

Vanguard Exiles early access and gameplay features

The game, developed by The Tea Division, will launch with PvP and couch co-op modes. Players will be able to test different strategies, unlock new factions, and explore expanding zones. The early access phase is expected to last six months to a year, with community feedback shaping future updates.

Garfield, discussing his decision to create an auto battler, said he wanted a game that blends board game mechanics with digital strategy. His vision is to offer a unique experience different from Magic: The Gathering while keeping deep, tactical gameplay at its core.

How to try Vanguard Exiles?

Players can download the free demo on Steam, available since August 2024, or check it out during February’s Steam Next Fest. Pricing details aren’t confirmed yet, but similar auto battlers on Steam cost around $15 to $20.
