Samsung to introduce new blue phosphorescent OLED panels

Samsung Display has announced that it will be introducing new blue phosphorescent OLED panels in 2025. The new material stack, called B1, is expected to increase the efficiency of OLED devices by more than 65%. The company is reportedly planning to adopt a blue phosphorescence material in the second half of 2025. This is a year later than expected.

Phosphorescent blue OLED emitters (PhOLED)

Phosphorescent blue OLED emitters (PhOLED) can improve the efficiency and performance of future OLED displays. The red and green pixels in traditional OLED panels are made of phosphorescent materials that ensure 100% efficiency in terms of brightness. 

LG Display and Samsung Display are both reviewing phosphorescent blue (PHOLED) that can improve the efficiency and performance of future OLED displays. Universal Display (UDC) is emerging as the most likely supplier of PHOLED due to its years of research and patents in the area.

The development of PHOLED promises to greatly enhance the prospects for OLED displays by allowing for improved brightness efficiency and/or lower cost. Early this year, UDC announced that they expect to achieve target performance for the commercialisation of blue PHOLED by the end of the year and expect commercial sales of the material by 2024.

In conclusion, Samsung Display's decision to adopt blue phosphorescence material in the second half of 2025 is a significant step towards improving the efficiency and performance of OLED devices. 

The development of PHOLED is expected to greatly enhance the prospects for OLED displays by allowing for improved brightness efficiency and/or lower cost. We can expect to see the commercial sales of the material by 2024.
