The Sindh government has launched an electric scooter scheme. In the first phase, 1,000 electric scooters will be given to women across the province through a computerised draw next month.
The scheme aims to improve mobility for women and their ability to travel without fear and consequently grow their confidence through independent travel.
Notably, the decision was made by the Senior Minister for Information, Transport, and Mass Transit, Sharjeel Inam Memon, after a high-level meeting in Karachi to discuss various EV transport programmes and projects, including electric scooters and electric taxis.
Memon stated that the electric scooters and other green transport initiatives would be expectedly completed by June 2025.
"This is not about just transport. It is about women's empowerment and job creation, particularly for youth, and it contributes to a cleaner environment," Memon stated.
Others in attendance were Secretary of Transport Asad Zamin; Kamal Dayo, MD, SMTA; Fawad Ghaffar Soomro, CEO, Trans Karachi; and Zameer Abbasi, Director, Yellow Line.
The meeting also included an update on the progress of the Yellow Line and Red Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems.
According to officials, work done on the Jam Sadiq Bridge is ahead of schedule, and two major depots for the Yellow Line are almost completed.
