In a fresh round of relief for those struggling to make ends meet because of inflation and tax burden, the Sindh government has kicked off the distribution of solar home systems (SHSs) for 200,000 low-income households.

The development was shared by Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah on Wednesday, who announced that he was instructed by Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari to obtain an additional 300,000 SHSs for further distribution.

The Sindh CM noted that the project was launched to provide a sustainable electricity solution to families who are still facing the aftermath of destruction caused by the 2022 floods.

“We’re installing 270MW solar power plants, which will provide electricity at a rate of Rs9.8 per unit,” he explained.

The Sindh government resorted to paving foundations of power plants relying on imported coal to address the energy shortage in the province when it met with restrictions while promoting renewable energy and executing the Thar coal project, Shah recalled a past event.

“In 2013-14, the then prime minister Raja Pervez Ashraf approved the Thar coal project, but securing loans for its execution remained difficult due to a lack of federal guarantees,” he said.

Regarding the inauguration of the Thar coal project, he expressed gratitude to President Asif Ali Zardari for welcoming the then PM Nawaz Sharif.
