In a bid to regulate the country's extraterrestrial operations and its challenges, Pakistan Space Activities Regulatory Board (PSARB) has completed the initial draft of the country’s first-ever Space Regulatory Framework.
Currently in circulation among relevant stakeholders for review and final approval, the draft has also been shared with organisations such as the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA).
These regulatory bodies have been asked to provide feedback before the finalisation and implementation of the framework.
As outlined in the draft, multiple comprehensive policies for various space domains, including Satellite Communications, Earth Observation, Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT), and Space Transportation.
The policies listed in Pakistan's upcoming space regulatory framework have been designed to bring the country in line with global standards of space governance.
Notable features of the proposed framework revolve around a clear licensing system for space services, risk and safety management protocols, mechanisms for satellite frequency coordination, space object registration, and compliance with international legal obligations.
On the sidelines, the draft also takes into account cybersecurity, data protection, and transparency in commercial operations.
To serve the purpose being discussed, PSARB signed an agreement with Access Partnership to develop this regulatory roadmap on March 3, ensuring a competitive and consumer-oriented space environment.
After thorough feedback from all stakeholders, the roadmap will be finalised and submitted to the federal government for approval before its full-fledged enforcement.
