Elon Musk-owned Tesla robotaxi service is about to be available in Arizona as the electric vehicle (EV) maker has received approval to begin testing its autonomous Tesla vehicles in another US state.

Citing an email from the state’s transportation department, Reuters reported that the company applied for a permit in June to begin trials for the Tesla self-driving ride-sharing service.

The EV giant also plans to conduct tests in the Phoenix Metro area with safety drivers present.

While Tesla has not commented on the development, the exact date for the commencement of Tesla's robotaxi service is still under wraps.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk previously claimed that the company is willing to launch an autonomous ride-hailing service that could serve about half of the US population by the end of 2025.

In June, Tesla tested its ride-hailing facility in a limited area of Austin, Texas, using around a dozen vehicles. This trial involved a select group of passengers and came with strict restrictions, including having a safety monitor in the front passenger seat.

The expected expansion of Tesla robotaxis to Arizona could position Tesla another step closer to its ambition of widening the footprint of its autonomous vehicle offerings and revolutionising the ride-sharing industry.
