Hyundai Motor Company has announced plans to launch its first Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV) in 2027, with an anticipated driving range of more than 600 miles.

The announcement was made during Hyundai’s 2025 CEO Investor Day, where the company announced its vision for 2030 and its product roadmap.

The launch of an EREV exemplifies a milestone for Hyundai’s electrification initiatives. Unlike an electric vehicle (EV), the EREV will have a small engine used to recharge the battery while travelling, significantly extending driving range and overcoming one of the largest barriers to switching to an EV, range anxiety.

Hyundai also anticipates that its electrified vehicle line-up—including EREVs, hybrids, and battery-electric vehicles (BEVs)—will reach 3.3 million units annually by 2030, with over 18 hybrid models that will complement its growing battery-electric vehicle portfolio.

Hyundai global EV expansion

In addition to the EREV, Hyundai is preparing region-specific EVs to strengthen its global presence:

  • IONIQ 3 designed for Europe
  • Elexio (produced in China)
  • A new electric sedan for global markets

This regional strategy highlights Hyundai's plan to serve different markets while pursuing its global electrification initiatives.

Hyundai is allocating $2.7 billion to a Phase 2 expansion of HMGMA, with the goal of establishing an additional 200,000-unit production capacity by 2028. It will also implement Software-Defined Factory (SDF) systems to increase global production by 1.2 million units.

Regarding technology, Hyundai is developing next-generation batteries and aims to launch a cloud-based battery management system in 2026 to create cost-effective batteries with a longer useful life.

Genesis joins Hyundai's electrification efforts

Hyundai's luxury division Genesis will also introduce EREV, hybrid, and battery-electric powertrains into its entire lineup of vehicles, starting with its flagship SUV. The brand aims to grow to 350,000 sales globally by 2030 and further establish the Genesis brand in the premium EV market.

Hyundai increased its guidance for 2025. It expects revenue to increase 5–6%, operating profit margin at 6–7%, and a KRW 77.3 trillion investment programme by 2030 supporting electrification, advanced technologies, and expansion of manufacturing capabilities.
