In view of rising online scams carried out through unregistered smartphones, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has warned of blocking all unregistered mobile devices from local networks.

The telecom regulator has urged citizens to register their phones using the Device Identification Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS) to ensure uninterrupted service.

The telecommunication authority believes that unregistered mobile phones pose a significant risk to national security and can be misused for financial and cyber fraud.

Emphasising that owning, selling, or using such devices is illegal and can lead to serious penalties, the authority has advised the public against buying or selling such devices, adding that these devices are not recognised by the official system and cannot be legally operated.

Users were also warned that those continuing to use the devices concerned will encounter service suspension in addition to legal proceedings.

PTA has clarified that the deadline to register such mobile phones is approaching shortly, encouraging citizens to check their device status on the DIRBS portal and complete registration if needed to avoid any inconvenience.
