Apple has introduced changes to its App Store age rating system, aiming to provide apps and games with more precise and detailed age ratings.
In addition to the current 4+ and 9+ ratings, the Cupertino-based tech giant has added three new tiers: 13+, 16+, and 18+.
In an email sent to the developers, the tech giant has claimed that these new tiers are part of the App Store's new age rating system.
The company has already reassigned apps to these new age groups automatically, based on the previous responses developers gave in the App Store’s age rating questionnaire.
However, developers who feel their app’s new rating is inaccurate can manually adjust it using App Store Connect.
The most recent beta versions of iOS and other systems now display the updated ratings.
To support this change, Apple has updated the age rating survey with new mandatory questions. These questions cover several factors, including in-app controls, capabilities, medical or wellness topics, and violent themes in your app or game.
In order to avoid having their app updates blocked in App Store Connect, developers must answer these questions by January 31, 2026.
Additionally, when assessing the frequency of sensitive content, Apple has reminded developers of the significance of adhering to laws like COPPA and GDPR and taking into account all app features, "including AI assistants and chatbot functionality."
