Apple is now delivering the iOS 17.3 Release Candidate (RC) to beta testers, following its availability in December last year.

The Cupertino-based iPhone maker is expected to roll out the stable version of iOS 17.3 as soon as next week — the final release usually comes a week after the release candidate rolls out to beta testers

The update, currently in beta, is significant for introducing Stolen Device Protection —a crucial security feature for cases where an iPhone is stolen and the thief has the victim's passcode.

It should be noted that this update includes several features.

On Wednesday, iOS 17.3 RC started rolling out to Apple's beta programme users. Apple's press release regarding the launch of a new Black Unity Sport Band for the Apple Watch indicated that the update is expected "later next week." With this update, the release also mentioned the arrival of a new Unity Bloom Lock Screen wallpaper for iPhone and iPad.

Among the additions to iOS 17.3, the standout feature is Apple's Stolen Device Protection. In an opt-in approach (not enabled by default), this feature counters thieves attempting to learn a user's passcode before stealing their iPhones.

If a theft occurs, the thief may use the passcode to lock the user out of their iPhone and Apple account by altering passwords and settings, having witnessed or gained knowledge of the passcode.

Once activated, Stolen Device Protection initiates automatically when it detects an iPhone being unlocked in an unfamiliar location.

The feature secures settings behind biometric (Face ID or Touch ID) authentication and introduces a one-hour time delay for changes to each setting. This delay gives the victim additional time to regain control of their stolen iPhone.

iOS 17.3 also brings Collaborative Music Playlists, an Apple Music feature enabling users to create shared playlists collaboratively. Additionally, the update introduces song reactions using emojis.

Anticipated features, which are yet to be implemented, include next-generation CarPlay, AirPlay support in hotels, and compliance with the EU's DMA regulations, which may lead to the App Store's split and support for third-party app stores and app sideloading on iPhones used in EU countries.
