BMW is set to launch the new iX3 later this year, marking the start of an aggressive electric vehicle (EV) expansion. The next-generation iX3 is the first car built on BMW's Neue Klasse platform, which will offer 30% quicker charging, increased range, and better efficiency.
The German carmaker will have an "unprecedented ramp-up", rolling out more than 40 new and refreshed EVs by 2027. With its sales worldwide falling 4% last year, BMW is counting on the new offerings to fuel expansion.
Neue Klasse arrives with a Digital Nervous System and Heart of Joy ECU, to boost in-car computing capability and combine drivetrain functions for added efficiency of up to 25%. The vehicles will also offer cylindrical battery cells and an 800V power system, giving a 20% boost to energy density as well as having the potential to cut battery costs by as much as 50%.
Following the iX3, BMW will launch the next-gen i3, an electric sedan to take on the Mercedes CLA EV and Tesla Model 3. The EV share of the company is still increasing, with 426,500 EVs sold in the last year, representing 17% of sales.
In Europe, electric models now represent more than 20% of BMW sales, with MINI and Rolls-Royce also experiencing a move toward electrification.
