In a country where SUVs and sedans have long dominated the automotive landscape, Pakistan's automotive scene took a remarkable turn on Friday, with BYD Pakistan announcing the launch of the BYD Shark 6 PHEV — the country's first-ever plug-in hybrid pickup truck.
Pickups in Pakistan are on the rise, not just as sturdy working vehicles, but as friendly vehicles that combine the best of business and pleasure attributes. With the arrival of the Shark 6, this trend is accelerating.
While talking to Gadinsider about the recently introduced National Electric Vehicle (NEV) Policy 2025-30 by government, BYD Pakistan Vice President of Sales and Strategy Danish Khaliq said: “Pakistan has introduced the NEV Policy 2025-30 which is a very good initiative since the government is realizing the importance of electric vehicles. Currently, the country is in a fight with fuel crises and through electric vehicle adoption, many challenges would be resolved. It is the matter of promoting electric vehicles but also bringing more products in line with this.”
BYD Shark 6 specs
The BYD Shark 6 PHEV is more than just another pickup; it is an indication that Pakistan's automotive market is coming of age.
Addressing the audience at the launch event, BYD Pakistan Country Head Lei Jian highlighted the company’s global journey. He said: “Thirty years ago, BYD was founded in China with the green dream of using our technological innovations to provide sustainable development for all of us. In the past 30 years, BYD has grown across six continents and more than 100 countries and regions, we trust the power of technology.”
Measuring 5,457 mm long x 1,971 mm wide x 1,925 mm high, the Shark 6 sits on a 3,260 mm wheelbase with a very respectable 230 mm of ground clearance. Although it weighs 2,710 kg, it strikes the right balance between toughness and sophistication.

BYD Shark 6 exterior
BYD has not skimped on design or features. The LED headlights and daytime running lights (DRLs), shark fin antenna, and aluminium roof tracks fashion practicality with style.
Rain-sensing wipers, auto-dimming mirror, and heated, retractable exterior mirrors indicate comfort and convenience, while also adding a premium feature, soundproof glass, which is something we don't often indulge in here in a pickup truck.
HUBCO CEO Kamran Kamal shared his vision at the launch, saying, “We all know that the world is shifting at a faster pace than ever imagined before, and Pakistan is at a crossroads, we can follow or we can lead. At Mega Motors and HUBCO, we always believe in leading the way, and with this launch, we will show Pakistan what is possible and what one can achieve.”
BYD Shark 6 Interior
From the inside, the Shark 6 looks and feels much more like a luxury SUV than a utility truck.
- 25-inch LCD instrument cluster
- 6-inch rotating touchscreen
- Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Dynaudio 12-speaker sound system
The pickup even has heated and ventilated front seats, a wireless phone charger (50W), and a variety of USB ports, proving that this isn’t a barebones work vehicle.
BYD Shark 6 power and performance
The Shark 6 combines a 1.5T hybrid engine with BYD's Blade Battery system for
- 29.58kWh battery capacity
- 100 km of electric-only range (NEDC)
- Total combined range: 800 km
With two motors producing 321 kW (430 hp) and 650 Nm of torque, the truck gets from 0–100km/h in just 5.7 seconds, performance numbers that leave most pickups in the dust.

Explaining the appeal, Kamal said: “BYD Shark isn’t just Pakistan’s first plug-in hybrid pickup truck, it’s the promise from us to Pakistani consumers who deserve the cutting-edge technology that is changing the experience of people in China, the Americas, and Europe."
"I think the question people will ask is: what is in it for you? It will halve your fuel bill — you can drive 100 kilometres on electricity if you want. If you want the power of a traditional engine, you have it. If you want the efficiency of the electric motor, you’ve got it. This is a choice. This is freedom," he added.
BYD Shark 6 safety features
BYD packed the Shark with safety technology normally reserved for premium SUVs:
- Six airbags (including side and far-side)
- 360° Camera with parking sensors
- Adaptive Cruise Control and Automatic Emergency Braking
- Lane Departure Warning and Prevention
- Blind Spot Detection and Cross Traffic Alert
- Driver Fatigue Monitor System
There is even Trailer Stability Control and Hill Descent Control, so the Shark is ready for towing or into the unknown.
Upon asking about the placement of charging station across Pakistan for EVs Khaliq told Gadinsider, “BYD’s local partner, Mega Motor Company, has a sister company, HUBCO Green specifically established for this reason. HUBCO Green aims to establish as many electric vehicle charging hub stations through Pakistan."
"HUBCO has closely worked with many oil and petrol businesses such as PSO and PARCO to repurpose the service stations and identify locations where charging stations for these cars can be built," he added.

BYD Shark 6 price and booking details
The BYD Shark 6 PHEV is priced at Rs19.95 million, with bookings open at Rs3.95 million.
Jian concluded: “Since our entry into Pakistan in 2024, we have been committed to providing the latest technology, the better products, and the best service. Today, we are here to witness another big moment with the launch of the BYD Shark 6, and this is just the beginning.”
Moreover, Kamran concluded his remarks in the event with a forward-looking promise: “We are also building a charging infrastructure in collaboration with PSO, PARCO, Attock Petroleum, and we are promising you there will be a charging station every 200 kilometres, from Karachi to Khunjerab or Karachi to Gwadar. So you can travel from Karachi to Lahore, Islamabad to Peshawar, and drive uninterrupted."
