Gone are the days when ChatGPT was a merely an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot, and now this is going way beyond imagination of many as OpenAI has added a new feature called Instant Checkout in ChatGPT, making its home-grown AI tool an ultimate shopping assistant.
Allowing users to buy items directly from US sellers on Etsy, all within the chat window, ChatGPT's new Instant Checkout feature is powered by the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) and built with Stripe.
The discouraging side part of the development is that ChatGPT's Instant Checkout is only available in the US currently. It works across all ChatGPT tiers, including the free version.
As of now, the AI-driven shopping tool for ChatGPT supports single item purchasing only, but OpenAI has announced plans to soon introduce multi-item carts.
For those living outside the US, the good news is that the feature will expand to other markets and provide access to over a million Shopify merchants.
Here's how to use ChatGPT's Instant Checkout
If a product is eligible to be sold on ChatGPT, users simply tap “Buy,” confirm their payment and shipping details, and complete their order. Payments, orders, and fulfilment are managed by merchants through their existing systems, while the AI chatbot facilitates the connection.
It must be noted that OpenAI does not charge buyers for this service; instead, it collects a small fee from merchants.
OpenAI describes ACP as an open standard that enables AI agents, businesses, and individuals to make purchases effortlessly. The company has also claimed developers can implement it in a powerful, secure, and easy manner.
This launch marks OpenAI’s significant step into e-commerce, transforming ChatGPT from a simple chat tool into a transactional platform.
