For the first time in the public sector of Pakistan, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has introduced a generative AI-powered chatbot to facilitate and streamline the process of filing income tax returns for citizens.
The AI chatbot went live on the official FBR website earlier this week and is intended to respond to tax-related queries 24/7 so that individuals and businesses can better fulfil their tax obligations.
This AI chatbot is part of the FBR's ongoing transformation plan, which aims to modernise Pakistan's tax system through the use of technology.
While still in beta mode, the chatbot is capable of providing immediate and bespoke answers to a range of questions about income tax, sales tax and customs-related queries.
This initiative represents a considerable effort to simplify the filing of taxes for citizens who often struggle to figure out complicated forms and/or wait for extended time periods on human-operated call centres.
In a test run, this reporter asked the chatbot a number of questions moving from simple to technical concepts and received quick and coherent answers.
FBR officials indicated the chatbot is expected to eliminate manual call centres over time, thereby reducing wait time for taxpayers and saving costs.
Revenue officials confirmed the AI chatbot is an initiative under a broader strategy to enhance digital adoption and transparency in the tax system.
FBR has added a disclaimer clarifying that the chatbot provides general information based on existing laws and regulations and does not represent the official stance of the department. The responses cannot be taken as legal advice or presented in a court of law.
